— Countless small steps, plus changes in work habits and work stations resulted in major boosts in productivity and savings for a Muskogee pipe casing producer.

Officials with V & M TCA, 3800 Port Place, credit their success to going Lean.

“We decided three or four years ago to get involved with Lean line consultants,” said V & M Tech Manager Tim Payne. He said consultants came to the business to help workers implement more efficient ways to work.

Lean Manufacturing is a program of the Oklahoma Manufacturing Alliance. The program is geared to transform the way manufacturers do business by producing more with existing resources.

Since taking part in the Lean program, V & M TCA saved a total of $1.38 million in costs and improved its product delivery time by 20 percent. Over the past two years, the manufacturer also showed a 6 percent reduction in its carbon footprint — a measure of the impact an industry or individual has on the environment — in particular, the amount of greenhouse gases used.

The company, with 160 employees, was honored as a “Lean Champion” at the 14th annual Business & Industry Fall Banquet recently. V & M TCA was cited for creating more than 30 continuous improvement teams and following four key principals: Safety, cost saving, environment and service and quality.

Payne said the Lean program helped the manufacturer organize its work stations and standardize its procedures.

“We have fewer failures, fewer rejected pipes, so we reduced the amount of electricity and gas we consume,” he said.

Payne said credited employees with making the program work.

“They are our success,” he said. “It’s the fact they are embracing the program.”
